5th Wheel Slider Hitch for 2016 Ram 2500 Diesel Short-Bed

Question:

I have a 2016 Dodge Ram heavy duty 2500 diesel 6.7 cummins motor. I am looking at a Jayco 2017 5th wheel trailer approx. gvw of 12490#. The maximum tow weight from Dodge is 25,000# for my truck. Am I going to have any problems with towing. Also, my truck is a short bed Thanks for any help or info!

Your 2016 Ram 2500 diesel certainly has the grunt required to tow a trailer that weighs half its rated towing capacity, but since you have a short-bed pickup you will need a slider type hitch that will give you the necessary clearance between the cab and trailer to make tight turns.

If your short bed has the factory 5th wheel rail kit you can use the superb 20K B&W hitch # BWRVK3670 which drops right into the 4 pucks in the bed. This slider gives you a full 12-inches of travel to give you turning clearance.

If instead you do not have the factory 5th wheel prep kit you can install an industry-standard 5th wheel base rail setup like # C16427-204 which is a custom-fit kit made for your truck. This will allow you to mount any brand of industry-standard slider hitch, such as Curt # C16541 or Reese # RP30084. For a wiring harness you can use # C56000 which plugs in at your factory 7-way.

The only accessory item you may need is a transmission cooler. Since coolers are not vehicle-specific you can use the largest one that fits in the available mounting area in front of the A/C condenser, such as Derale # D13503.
