How Would Prodigy P3 # 90195 Install to 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question:

I have a 2016 Dodge Caravan Crew Plus. It came with the trailer tow group. I have a class 2 hitch, a 7 pin connector and trailer tow wiring harness from the factory. They say I can tow 3600 lbs. I would like to install an electronic break controller as I will be purchasing a small RV trailer 3160 lbs . I have asked a dodge dealer, and 2 RV places. They have all given me different answers. Now, Im not a mechanic but I believe I can purchase a Tekonsha P3 with a break control harness and should be able to plug and play after I find the connector under the dash. Is this correct? The answers I am getting from other places is that even though dodge ran a wiring harness, they never ran the wires for a break controller, or 12 volt power. ??? but im thinking to myself, why would dodge do this. It doesnt make sense, and they want to charge me 2-3 hours of labor. Any clarification would be very helpful.

Your 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan can pretty easily have a Prodigy P3 # 90195 brake controller installed in it but it does not have a factory install harness like you mentioned so you would need to go a different route to wire it to your 7-way.

For a wiring kit to install the brake controller to the 7-way you would want the Wiring Kit for 2 and 4 Brake Electric Brake Controllers # 5506. This will provide the power source and ground for the wiring for the brake controller. You will need to test the wires from the brake pedal switch of your vehicle to find a circuit that has voltage when the brakes are applied and none when not applied. This will be the circuit you will run the red wire to.

Finally you will need to run a length of 10 gauge wire (part # 10-1-1) from the brake output circuit of the controller to the brake output circuit of the 7-way (blue wire). The # 10-1-1 is sold by the foot so you will need to order a quantity of the amount of feet you will need.
