Can Tekonsha Primus Brake Controller Be Installed To Replace Tekonsha Voyager

Question:

My church has a 2012 Chevy Express with a Tekonsha Voyager controller installed that is locking up the trailer brakes intermittely. I was looking to replace it and considering a Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller. It appears this controller would work as a direct replacement and have a digital display which I think would be helpful. Correct?

If you have adjusted the brakes on the trailer and made sure they are adjusted properly, and then tested the trailer brake output pin on the trailer harness with a volt meter to make sure you are getting the proper current then you may have a faulty brake controller. You can replace the Voyager with the Primus brake controller.

The difference between the Tekonsha Voyager # 39510 and the Primus # TK90160 is the way you can mount them.

The Voyager requires the controller to be mounted between -20 degrees and 70 degrees.

The Primus is more forgiving on the installation as it requires mounting the controller between 0 degrees (level) and 90 degrees in the vertical plane.

The Primus has an LED display and will work with trailers that have up to 3 axles, while the Voyager can work with trailers that have up to 4 axles. .
