When Installing Curt Trailer Hitch On 2005 Dodge Sprinter Is Vehicle Modification Required
Question:
I own a 2005 dodge sprinter with the 118inch wheel base with the factory plastic coated step everyone else seems to get. I would like to install a hitch that does not compromise the vehicle for corrosion inhibition since these vans already have rust issues. I also dont want to lose my spare tire mounting under the vehicle but since the OEM no longer makes the original hitch this appears to be one of the only solutions. If there are other options that fit the above desired parameters I would appreciate the information. In the questions and answers section of the 13250 hitch informational area is a statement that You will not have to modify the vehicle at all to install the hitch. When I go to purchase the hitch the Curt instructions indicate that 9/16 holes must be drilled through the frame and other holes have to be enlarged as well. The instructions also indicate that the exhaust hanger needs to be modified. What is correct? Does the installer need to modify the vehicle or are the attached instructions incorrect? thank you,

As the instructions for the Curt Hitch # 13250 state, the spare tire will need to be relocated, the hanger bracket will need to be modified, and you will have to drill two 9/16 inch holes in the frame using the trailer hitch as a template. And existing holes in the frame will need to be enlarged to 1-1/8 inches.
As far as promoting rust, the hitch is powder coated steel, and is corrosion resistant.
