How To Determine If You Need Weight Distribution Or Rear Suspension Enhancements
Question:
I am looking for some suspension enhancement for a 2006 Xterra 4WD. I will be towing a 5x8 enclosed cargo trailer that weights about 2000 lbs. about 600lbs of cargo in the truck including people. We will be driving for 3 months across the country camping out of the trailer. What would be the best option to help make the ride better and save my rear suspension....the sumo shocks or firestone airbags or Timbren? Also, I have the factory towing package but need a brake controller. what is a, affordable yet reliable and easy to use solution? Thanks a million!

I will say that although suspension enhancements are the best option to enhance/increase your suspension's effectiveness and wear life, if you are in any way looking to level the load of a trailer and/or reduce trailer sway, the best option would be to use a weight distribution. The use of a weight distribution system is recommended if your gross trailer weight (GTW) is more than 50% of your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR).
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system, you will need to measure your trailer's tongue weight and any weight stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. You can do this by using our etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale part # e99044. Once you have determined your total tongue weight, you can then choose the most effective weight distribution system for your needs. For a total tongue weight between 100-450 lbs, I recommend using the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System part # FA92-00-0450.
A properly rated and installed weight distribution system will not require the need for rear suspension enhancements. However, if you do not choose to go this route, the best rear suspension enhancements for your 2006 Nissan Xterra is our Air Lift Ride Control Air Helper Springs part # AL59562 as they will provide you will the greatest level of comfort and reduced suspension wear while towing.
For a brake controller compatible with your vehicle's factory tow package, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885 and part # 3050-P as this is a plug and play option which happens to be one of our most popular brake controllers.
