Should Trailer Wiring 5-Way Allow Trailer with Surge Brakes to Back Up When in Reverse
Question:
I have an 07 Tacoma that came with the 4 flat trailer connector. I bought a Hopkins #47515 4 flat to 5 flat adapter that comes with the blue wire needed to be able to back the trailer up without the brakes locking up. I spliced that wire into my reverse light and when I put a meter to the new 5 flat adapter on my truck I get a constant 12v. When I have the trailer connected everything is good as far as running lights, brake lights, turn signals, etc. However, when trying to back the trailer I can go maybe a foot in reverse and the trailers hydraulics lock up the brakes. I try and drive forward to disengage and reverse again with no success. Do you think its a trailer wiring harness issue? Should I have more power on my reverseinch slot on my truck end? Any leads would be appreciated! Thank you! PS I will be replacing the wiring harness eventually as the connector has serious deterioration around the wires.

All you should need on the fifth circuit of your 5-way is a 12 volt signal to activate the reverse lock out. Have you used a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to verify you have 12 volts on that pin? Looking at the condition of your 5-way it is also very possible yours is damaged to the point it's not able to send the voltage to the circuit.
For a replacement we have the part # HM47910.
