Weight Distribution and Sway Control Recommendation for Homesteader Challenger

Question:

I am looking at the Equalizer 6000lb weight distributing hitch but I see it comes with a 2inch ball. Can this be changed to a 2 5/16th ball? I have a Homesteader Challenger enclosed trailer that weighs 2300lbs and I have about 3000lbs of camping equipment inside. The trailer is 18ft with a height of 810inch so I am really in need of the 4 point sway control. I already have the shank so I would not need to purchase that. I cannot find an Equalizer 8000lb and I think the 10000lb would be too stiff. Am I heading in the right direction here or is there something more suitable? Thanks!

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

So your trailer's tongue weight will be between 530 and 795 lbs when loaded. That means the 6k Equalizer is going to most likely be rated too low and thus not be effective. The best solution for this would then be the Strait Line system part # RP66073. This has a tongue weight range of 400-800 lbs which would be perfect for you, has the only sway control system that works to prevent sway before it starts, and is compatible with your current shank.

It does not come with a hitch ball so for a 2-5/16 inch ball you would want the part # 19286 which would work well.
