Trailer Hitch, Trailer Wiring, and Brake Controller Recommendations for a 2009 Volkswagen Touareg
Question:
I need to equip my newly acquired 2009 Touareg to tow using either a flat four connector or a 7 pin with a brake controller. The car currently has no hitch, controller, or trailer wiring. Can you recommend everything I need to get set up?

Yes, I will be happy to recommend a trailer hitch, wiring, and brake controller for your 2009 Volkswagen Touareg. Starting with a trailer hitch you can use Curt hitch # 13220. This is a Class 3 trailer hitch with a 2-inch receiver. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation for you.
For a trailer wiring harness, you will need to install a 7-Way in order to use a brake controller. To add the 7-Way though you first have to install 4-Way harness # 118509. The 4-Way provides the light functions only for the trailer. It will need to plug into a 4- to 7-Way adapter and a little hardwiring will need to be done to make the 7-Way fully functional.
After the 4-Way is installed the next step is to install # ETBC7 which adds the 7-Way and provides the wiring and accessories needed to install a brake controller.
There are some other special instructions for installing a brake controller on your Touareg if you have and want to use the factory brake controller wiring harness. I have included a link to a help article that covers this for you.
For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up, easy to use, and it is reliable.
I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If the ball mount kit does not have the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, use the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
