Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer with 400 Pound Tongue Weight
Question:
Hello, I need a weight distribution system and sway for my tent trailer. Tongue weight max will be 400 lbs. Im looking at model Pro Séries Item # PS49901. The problem I have is the bracket to attach the chain might not fit because the propane tank support is flush with frame. Going further back there is space to attach around the frame near the batterie but distance from center of ball hitch is about 40 inches.I also saw one day on a trailer a bracket attached on the side of the frame instead of around it. Do you have anything like that? Sway bar I guess can be installed on the side of the frame drilling through? Please confirm if any system will fit. Thanks,

For your trailer that will have a maximum tongue weight of 400 pounds, the Pro Series Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control # PS49901 referenced in your question will be a good option. Just keep in mind that when calculating the total tongue weight of your setup, you will want to include both the loaded tongue weight of your trailer, along with any added cargo coming from behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. This system has a maximum tongue weight capacity of 550 pounds.
Also note that with this friction sway control system, you will not be able to backup with the weight distribution bars attached. For a similar system that will allow you to backup, I recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control # RP66072. This has a tongue weight capacity of 200 to 600 pounds. You will just need to add a compatible shank like the Reese # RP54970 and hitch ball such as the 2 inch # A-90 or 2-5/16 inch # 19286.
Then for installing the weight distribution system brackets while working around the propane tanks on your trailer frame, I recommend using the Reese Chain Hangers # RP58305. As you mentioned in your question, these offer an alternative to traditional lift brackets by providing an attachment point on the side of the trailer tongue. It is a quick, bolt-on installation and all the necessary hardware is included. This will work on trailer frames that are up to 2-1/4 inches wide.
I have attached the installation details for you to check out as well as an article on weight distribution systems that you may find helpful.
