Question:

Hi there, I have a 2011 chevy hhr. Is it possible and safe to use a 1/14inch class 2 hitch on my car. I have 3 bikes and cant find a suitable rack that's class 1 which is the hitch on the car now. It appears I need a class 2 hitch to carry 3 bikes. Thanks for your help.

I do have an option that will allow you to carry more than two bikes on your 2011 Chevrolet HHR however, the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24756 and Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11447 are the only two hitch receivers available for your vehicle. As they are both a Class I hitch receivers, you will be limited to carrying two bikes on the rear of the vehicle with a hitch receiver per the manufacturer's.

The most cost effective options would involve the use of a truck mounted bike rack such as the Thule Passage 3 Bike Carrier - Trunk Mount part # TH911XT. You may need to use an adapter bar such as the part # TH982XT in order to carry womens and childrens bikes at a level angle. This will not allow for access to the rear cargo area of the vehicle unless uninstalled.

If you would still like to access the rear cargo area without having to remove a bike rack, I recommend using the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 24756 in addition to our Thule Camber 2 Bike Rack part # TH9058 as this bike rack will tilt downward to allow access to the rear cargo area of your vehicle. This will carry 2 of your bikes.

In order to carry the third bike, you will need a roof rack. For this, I recommend using the Inno Square Crossbars System part # INB107 and part # INFR. You will also want a roof mounted bike rack carrier such as the Upright Roof Bike Carrier part # S64720 which will allow for you to carry the additional bike/bikes.
