Hub And Bearing Replacement For A 5,200 LBS. Mobile Home Axle

Question:

I have a flatbed trailer that has the older mobile home axles on it. Id like to see if it is possible to change the hubs on it so I can put regular trailer tires on it instead of the mobile home tires. Im not sure on spindle size, but the bearings that are on it are the 4T-LM67048 and 4T-25580. If that helps. Thanks.

I do have a hub and bearing assembly that will allow you to replace the hubs on your mobile home axle however, mobile home axles are intended for a one time single use only, therefore there is a limitation to readily available replacement parts.

When changing the hubs and bearing on a mobile home axle it is important to note the condition of the spindle. A discoloration or nicks/scarring on the spindle are a good sign of needing a replacement. Installing new parts on a damaged spindle will not only further damage the existing spindle but also damage the new parts you have just installed.

With that being said, I recommend you replace the spindle with a EZ Lube Spindle part # TRU37FR . The EZ Lube spindle has a built in grease fitting in addition to a brake mounting flange should the need arise.

For a hub that will allow for the more common 6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern, I recommend using the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly Part # 8-213-5UC1-EZ.

If you choose to keep your existing spindles, you will need to use a digital caliper such as the Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper part # PTW80157 to measure the inner seal diameter of your spindle. For a 2-1/8" inner diameter you'll can use the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly part # 8-213-5UC1-EZ and for a 2-1/4" seal you will need the Grease Seals 10-36 part # RG06-070 to replace the grease seals in your new kit.

I purchased a 8' X 30' construction trailer which has a single axle with open style rims. I want to pull this unit up north 200 miles each fall for hunting camp. Do you think the wheel bearings will be able to take this? Secondly, how do I get the bearing cap off? Is it a pry off or screw off type. What is the best grease to pack them with? Thanks

Have you inspected the hub and bearings? I wouldn't have a way to know for sure if they're in good condition and up to the task of your upcoming trips - recommend that bearings at least be inspected and re-packed once a year. I recommend a high temperature grease like # L11380. Most grease-style hubs have a press-in cap, so you'll just need to pry off the cap on your hubs.
