Installing A 7-Way Trailer Connection And Brake Controller On A 2010 Ford SSV Expedition

Question:

Hello, my expedition did not come with the factory 7 pole tow package. It has the factory 4 pole connection. I found the trailer brake control output attached to the plug at the rear of the vehicle . I have located the plug under the dash and it has power and brake pedal wire functions correctly. I am looking for the aux. 12 volt wire for my break away. I see older expeditions have a plug near the drivers rear door that you pick up this wire from . This vehicle has the wire harness routed on the inside of the frame and is tucked in so tight. With the independent rear suspension and skid plates the routing of said harness is nearly invisible. Do you know if Ford ran this wire to a plug that can be picked up like the older Expeditions and the F-150s? If so do you know the location? It may be of importance that this is a Special Service Expedition.

We don't have the information on the 2010 Expedition wiring, but it may very well be already run for you to tap into like the F-150's. I've attached that article to assist you.

If the power wire cannot be found there, I recommend running a wire from the front of your 2010 Special Service Expedition at the battery to the 7-way connection like the Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole # 37185. To run this wire, I recommend the # 10-1-1 sold by the foot and using the 40 amp. In-Line Circuit Breaker - Perpendicular Mount Bracket # 9510 about 24 inches behind the battery connection.

If you don't already have a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 because of its easy to read LCD screen that takes code deciphering out of the equation. It is a very reliable proportionate brake controller that will apply the trailer brakes with the same intensity and at the same time as you hit the brake pedal in your Expedition. This controller will easily connect using the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford, Lincoln, Mercury # 3035-P. I've attached a video of a similar install for you.
