Is Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch Needed with Reese Sidewinder on Trailer

Question:

I have short box dodge with ram boxes Do I need a slider hitch ? Or I will the sidewinder give you enough clearance for turning?

Expert Reply:

A sliding fifth-wheel hitch is not needed when using a Sidewinder. A Sidewinder will move the pivot point 22 inches behind the king pin to provide enough clearance when making sharp turns with your trailer.

If you do not yet have a Sidewinder installed on your trailer, you will just need to locate the existing pin box number. This can be found either on a sticker or stamped into the pin box itself. I have attached an article on Sidewinders that includes a conversion you can reference to match up your existing pin box with a compatible Sidewinder replacement.

For example, the Reese Sidewinder # RP34FR is designed for use with the Lippert 0719, 1621 and 1621HD pin boxes.
