Recommended Wiring for Trailer Brake Controller on 2012 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Hi there, I couldnt find a clear answer so thought it would be best to ask a separate question. Ive recently purchased a Jayco pop-up camper that requires a 7-way plug, however the 2012 Highlander has a 4-way plug installed. Do I have any options to use the existing wiring with an adapter / converter kits you sell? or do I have to run a new wire? My local RV store recommended that I would need to run a new wire for $500 which didnt feel right! Ive watched a few videos from your store and it looks like maybe there is a converter box that I could install. Will that provide the right power output and signals to allow for: 1 Ground 2 Brakes 3 Running lights 4 Aux 5 Stop and left signal 6 Stop and right signal 7 Backup I am also getting a brake controller installed separately for $280 - so its all a bit confusing and I feel like I might be getting ripped off! Thanks.

Since you already have a 4-way connector installed on your 2012 Toyota Highlander, all you will need to install a 7-way connector on your vehicle to connect with your Jayco Pop Up Camper is the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7.
This kit will include everything needed to install a 7-way connector and your trailer brake controller. I have attached a detailed article on the installation process for this kit that you might find helpful. I have also included an installation video on your 2012 Highlander that you can follow along with.
If you do not already have the brake controller, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is a great proportional controller that will activate your camper's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Highlander. It features an easy to read display with continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. The P2 is well known for its reliability and ease of installation.
