Towing a 5th-Wheel Trailer with 2017 Ram 3500 Short Box with RamBox

I do have a possible solution for you, however we do not currently have a Reese Elite below bed installation rail kit that is confirmed to fit your 2017 Ram 3500 short box with RamBox.

Because your truck is equipped with the RamBox feature, which results in a narrow truck bed, I recommend using a fixed 5th-wheel hitch along with a Reese Sidewinder Pin Box. The Sidewinder will move the pivot point 22 inches behind the king pin and is needed to prevent the pin box from contacting the RamBox sides. These are custom designed to replace the standard king pin on your trailer, so you will need to locate the part number of the pin box currently on your trailer. This is usually displayed on the pin box itself but if you cannot find this information, you can contact the trailer manufacturer with your VIN or serial number and they will be able to provide you with the coupler type.

I have attached a helpful article on Sidewinders for you to look through. Within the article is a chart that will help you choose the correct Sidewinder based on the pin box number for your trailer.

For a 5th-wheel hitch, I recommend looking at the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # RP30928 along with the Quick-Install Custom Base Rails # RP56010-53. This hitch will provide a 20,000 pound gross towing weight and a 5,000 pound vertical load limit. It features a premium forged, sing-piece jaw for a more secure jaw-to-king-pin connection which will minimize jarring and chucking.
