What Accessories Can Be Used With the Pro Series Cargo Carrier 63153 on a 2001 Nissan Xterra SE
Question:
I have a 2001 Nissan Xterra SE and we are looking at the safety and practicality of using a hitch mount cargo carrier when we travel and camp, throughout the US. Is this safe for my vehicle? How do I mount the license plate on them? What light kit is best to use with them? What is the difference between using a cargo bag on the carrier vs a tarp wrap? And lastly is there anything I can do to reduce rattle, bounce and movement in general? Thank you for any assistance and advice you can offer.

The 24x60 Pro Series Cargo Carrier, part # 63153, will work great in the 2 inch trailer hitch receiver at the rear of your 2001 Nissan Xterra SE. This cargo carrier has a 2-1/2 inch shank rise so any equipment should be clear of your muffler, which means it will be safe to use on your Xterra.
To mount your license plate on the cargo carrier you can use Mounting Bracket # LP10SB.
We offer 2 different light kits that fit perfectly on the Pro Series carrier. You can use either the Light Kit # 20174, or the LED version which is part # 98174LED. I also recommend using the 12 inch Car and Trailer End Loop, part # 9653P, to ensure that the wiring harness on your Xterra will reach either of the light kit's wiring harness.
When you mentioned the cargo bag versus a tarp wrap, I am guessing that you mean just putting a tarp around all of your equipment? In that case, the etrailer Cargo Bag, part # 988501, is the better option for a couple of reasons. It comes with mounting straps already attached to it so it will secure to your Pro Series carrier without additional straps (although you can use more if you want to), plus it provides a weatherproof option for your cargo. Even though a tarp can keep the rain off of your cargo, you will have to spend some time making sure that the tarp won't come loose while you are traveling down the highway.
To help reduce movement, and to lock your Pro Series carrier to your hitch receiver, you can use the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # 63232, by Let's Go Aero.
I have attached some demonstration and review videos for you to check out as well.
