Replacement Wheel and Tire Combination for 5.70-8 Tires With 4 inch on 4 inch Wheel Bolt Pattern

Question:

I have a 1970s tent trailer with 5.70-8 tires on 4 x 4 inch bolts. It has mismatched nuts, but Im fairly certain it never had lugnuts. I have a couple of inches spare in the wheel well and am wondering if I can upgrade to a little heavier duty tire/wheel, possibly slightly larger with actual lug nuts as Ive occasionally had problems with the nuts loosening due to vibration. Im hoping for a tire that can weather storage a little better, the trailer probably maxes out around 1200-1500 lb loaded. Thank you.

If your tire only has about 2 inches of clearance inside of the wheel well on your trailer then you will want to keep the same wheel and tire size. Your current tire and wheel are about the biggest that we currently offer. Changing it will not make a difference in the life or how heavy duty it is.

For direct replacements you can either use the Kenda # AM30120 which is the same 5.70-8 4 inch on 4 inch bolt pattern combination that you currently have. This tire and wheel combo has a max weight capacity of 910 lbs at 75 psi and has a 2 year warranty for the tire and a 1 year warranty for the wheel.

Another option would be to go with a tire and wheel combo which uses a galvanized wheel, like the Kenda # AM30130. This has the same capacities, and ratings. and warranties as part # AM30120, except it uses a galvanized wheel which is meant to be used on boat trailers. It has a coating that will give it better resistance to rust and corrosion than the white powder coat finish on part # AM30120.

You will want to use lugnuts with a 60 degree angle to use on these wheels.

If you are storing your trailer inside a garage then there isn't a whole lot that you can do to keep the tires from wearing out over time.

If you are storing your trailer outside, then what you will want to use is a wheel cover. Adco has an option that will fit your application perfectly. The Adco Ultra Tyre Gard, part # 290-3955 for white, or part # 290-3975 for black, will help to protect your tires from the elements and the sun. The sun beating down on your tires is actually the worst for them.

They also have a Tyre Gard in Gray, part # 290-3755, and Camouflage, part # 290-3655.
