Distribution Hitch Recommendation for 2006 Tacoma 4X4 Double Cab Long Bed with Factory Tow Package
Question:
I have an 06 Tacoma V6 4x4 double cab long bed with factory tow package. I have added a Firestone Ride Rite rear air bag kit and an on board compressor. I have the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller. I also have a SnugTop Supersport topper @ 150-200 lbs? I will have my 3 dogs in the back while towing the trailer @ 230 lbs. total. I just bought a 2016 Keystone Passport 171EXP expandable camper. Dry weight is 3,612lbs with 1,588 lbs capacity for 5,200 lb GVWR. Specs say 410 lb hitch weight. I have not picked up the camper yet so I dont have an actual tongue wt. What hitch would you recommend?

When trying to decide on a proper weight distribution (WD) system for your towing rig, you will need to know the total tongue weight of your set-up. The total tongue weight (TTW) will be a fully loaded ready to tow trailer, plus any weight located behind the rear axle of your Toyota Tacoma. You want to use a system where your total tongue weight will fall in between the WD system's tongue weight range. I have attached an article that will explain how to find the total tongue weight of your towing rig. The article suggest using the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale, # e99044, to help find your correct total tongue weight.
Once you have found your total tongue weight, then you will be able to decided on the correct system for your towing application.
As an example, if you find that your TTW is 500 lbs, then a weight distribution system like the Equal-i-zer WD w/ 4 Point Sway Control, # EQ37060ET, would be a WD system that will work well for this application. This WD system not only will distribute the weight of the trailer evenly across the towing rig, but its steel-on-steel friction will help minimize trailer sway that is cause by wind and sudden maneuvers.
I have attached a link to all the WD systems that we carry for you to review once yo have found your TTW. I also attached a review video of the Equal-i-zer hitch and a help article on how to determine if weight distribution will be needed on your trailer.
