The difference between a class II and class III bike rack is the trailer hitch receiver size it fits into. Many bike racks allow for 1-1/4 inch receivers (class I or class II) as well as 2 inch receivers (class III, IV, or V), but some will only fit one or the other. For instance, the Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack - 2" Hitches - Swinging # Y02465 will only fit 2 inch receivers like Class III, IV, or V. The larger shank on the 2 inch models will allow for more bikes and greater weight on some bike carrier options.

I've linked the page to all the hitch mounted bike options so you can see and compare. We have facets that will help you narrow down options that fit whatever receiver size you have whether 1-1/4 inches or 2 inches. If you have a 2-1/2 inch hitch receiver then you will need a reducer to use a bike carrier. I've linked that page to help with options as well.
