To protect your transmission, you simply need to follow the owners manual. I looked up your 2015 GMC Canyon 2WD and it should not be flat towed. I also looked up dolly towing and this vehicle needs to be towed from the rear. For this I recommend the Roadmaster Tow Dolly with Electric Brakes - 4,250 lbs # RM-2050-1. This will have the brakes, and signal lights you need. It comes with wheel nets for up to 16 inch wheel rims, but if you have the larger tires, I recommend the Erickson Adjustable Ratcheting Wheel Net w/ Hooks - 4" Wide - 3,333 lbs # EM58522.

You will simply drive the vehicle back onto the dolly, set the parking brake and put your transmission in park. Secure the rear wheels to the dolly, make sure your front wheels are straight and turn the ingnition to the locked/off position then pull your steering wheel to lock it in place.

Using a dolly in this manner will allow you to recreationally tow your 2015 GMC Canyon 2WD without any damage to your transmission.
