Availability of a Dual hitch Receiver to Carry a Hitch Mount Bike Rack and Tow a Trailer
Question:
Can a bike rack be welded to top of receiver ?

Expert Reply:
There are actually adapters made that offer 2 receivers so you will not have to weld a bike rack to the top of the receiver. We have numerous options like the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter, # RM-077-2. Or, you could use Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount, # D210, which has a receiver on top and ball mount on the bottom.
When using one of the above products remember that the top receiver cannot be used for towing and that the tongue weight includes the combined weight of everything attached to both the top and bottom receivers. Although the Curt # D210 has a 7500 pound towing, 750 pound tongue weight capacity, the receiver portion is limited to 350 pounds.
A bike rack should not be welded to the top of a trailer hitch receiver for several reasons. The trailer hitch or adapter like # RM-048-6, should not be modified because they have not been tested for that application. Making modifications will void the warranty because they are not considered safe by the manufacturer.
The bike rack manufacturers also advise against making modifications to the rack, including welding it to a receiver, as they are not designed for that purpose.
