Troubleshooting Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera on 2013 Ram 2500

Question:

hey guys, so I installed the Hopkins Smart hitch on my 2013 Ram 2500. Ive already established that I do not have power going to my 7way so I cant use the T connector. Alternate installation is to use my backup light line. I went that route and my results were unsatisfactory. I can leave my key in the ACC position, put the truck in reverse and the camera comes on and I can see a picture. However the image has multiple lines rolling through it from top to bottom, more of a nuisance than a deal breaker. However as soon as I fire up the engine the screen goes to blue. Ive scoured the internet for other users who may have had a similar result and have found that the issue may be with the voltage. I returned the camera because I though there was a chance it was defective. I really liked the camera and the design of the system and may purchase another one. If its a low voltage issue how do you recommend I fix that? My question is in your expert opinion could I/Should I run a dedicated 12v wire back to the camera? Should I get the power going to my 7way and use the T connector? Thoughts? Thanks e trailer experts!

To install the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System # HM50002 referenced in your question, I do recommend making the 7-way in your Ram 2500 fully functional and connecting the Smart Hitch this way. I spoke with my contact at Hopkins and he did state that the 2013 Ram has 9.6 volts on the reverse light voltage. This system needs 10 volts to run properly. Connecting via the OEM connector in your RAM will solve this issue and be a much simpler installation.

If your Ram 2500 has the factory 7-way, it's possible that certain functions are simply not active. I recommend checking the fuse box under the hood and locating the fuse cavity F28, which should have a 20 amp yellow cartridge fuse. This is for the backup lights. Make sure that the fuse is there and also that it is not blown/damaged. If one is needed, you can contact your local Ram dealer for the appropriate replacement. Once the fuse is installed, the factory 7-way should then be fully functional.
