For your 2005 Subaru Outback XT Limited Wagon, I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75560. This is a confirmed fit for all models with the exception of the Sport model, so it will work for the turbo MT model. This trailer hitch receiver is an easy bolt-on installation with the included hardware. It is a square-tube design with a black powder coat over an e-coat base for superior rust protection. The 2 inch receiver will give you more options for accessories and a higher capacity hitch.
If you will be using this hitch for towing, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C55370. This harness connects to existing factory wiring inside your vehicle with a simple quick connection.
For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 3" Drop, 3-1/2" Rise - 7.5K - Black # BWTS10035B. This will give you two common hitch ball sizes along with the adjustability to tow many trailers level. It has a very cool stowable option to protect your shins when not in use and give a clean look to the back of your Outback.

I think this is a misstatement by Jason S. This looks like it will fit the OUTBACK XT models but not the FORESTER XT models. Correct me if im wrong. But the way this hitch mounts does not look like it would work for a forester.
