When using a bike rack or cargo carrier with the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 12181, on a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero, you can use Curt Bike Rack Strap with Cambuckle, # 18050. Or, you can use another type of strap, like bungee straps, # EM06664, # EM06656, # EM06658, # EM06668, or ratchet straps, # EM34423, to help support the rack. Basically, any type of strap that will help support the rack will work.
Ideally, you would want the strap to be connected to a point on the vehicle that is higher and/or more forward than the rack itself. If your Montero has a roof rack, you could use that. Or if there is enough space at the hinge of the rear hatch you could hook it there. Basically the most convenient strap/location combination for you that also helps support the rack is what you are looking for.
