Options for Adding More Braking to Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

Hi I am interested in buying a complete disc brake kit for my trailer, it is a trailer for a 21ft boat . The trailer had single Axel drum brakes but would it be better to go ahead and add brakes on both axels? What measurements do I need to take into account for choosing the correct product ? I plan on buying new wheels so the bold patterns shouldnt be a problem .

I suggest that to begin your thought process on converting your boat trailer with drum brakes on one of its 2 axles to disc brake operation you refer to the linked articles which detail all of the things to consider when making such a conversion. You have the options to do a purely hydraulic disc brake installation or an OEH (electric-over-hydraulic) installation which requires a compatible trailer brake controller like # 90195 be installed in the tow vehicle to operate the EOH actuator.

You might also consider adding a set of drum brakes to the axle that currently does not have them. This would increase your stopping power but might be a substantially easier and definitely a less-costly undertaking than gong to disks. Two articles on adding drum brakes to a trailer, both electric and hydraulic, are also linked for your review.

Electric drum brakes are becoming more and more common on boat trailers these days due to their much lower cost and easier installation. If your non-braked axle has brake flanges already in place on the spindles then this route will be your easiest and by far your lowest-cost option to improve braking.
