To install the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885, on your 1997 GMC 2500 2WD truck, some models do have the brake (blue) and hot lead (orange or red) wires already ran from under the hood to the end of the driver's side frame rail. However, these wires are hard to access and additional wire will still be needed.

The easiest way to install the Prodigy brake controller on your 1997 GMC 2500 truck is to use the Tow Ready T-One Wiring Harness, part # 118315, and the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7.

You will first want to install the # 118315 wiring harness on your vehicle. This harness will attach to the vehicles taillight wiring harness plug located on the drivers side rear frame rail near the bumper. This will give you a 4-way flat trailer connector at the rear of your truck, which will be needed to plug into the 7-way and 4-way adapter included in the # ETBC7 kit. I am sending a link to the installation instructions on the # 118315 wiring harness.

With the #118315 wiring harness installed on the rear of your vehicle you will then install the # ETBC7 kit. It comes with a new 7-Way and 4-Way connector which will plug into the 4-way trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. The 4 remaining wires will be hardwired to the vehicle. I am sending a link to detailed instructions on how to install the # ETBC7 kit on your vehicle. It will show where the four remaining wires on the kit will need to be connected.

I am also including a link to a video of a Prodigy brake controller and the # ETBC7 kit being installed on a 1993 Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle is different but the wiring principle is the same.
