Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid without Adaptive Cruise Control

Question:

I have a 2016 Ford Hybrid, the most basic model with no adaptive cruise control. What are the items I need for the car to flat tow, and can I instal it myself? I plan on towing it behind my RV.

To flat tow your 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid you're going to need a tow bar, base plates, wiring for the lights, a supplemental braking system for the brakes, and possibly a high-low adapter.

The most popular base plates for your car are the Roadmaster EZ4 # RM-524434-4. The kit includes all the necessary hardware for installation and there is no welding required. I've linked the install details for you.

A tow bar to fit with the EZ4 kit is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520. The Falcon 2 has telescoping arms and a large hookup radius to make connecting easier.

Your Hybrid uses variable voltage taillights. This means for a lighting kit you'll need to use magnetic tow lights. I suggest the Optronics # TL21RK. They connect to a 4-way trailer connector on the back of your RV and then mount to the Focus using heavy-duty magnets. These are very easy to install and don't splice into the car's wiring at all.

For a supplemental braking system the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 is a favorite around here because of how reliable it is and it's easier to install than many other permanently installed systems.

Finally, you'll likely need a high-low adapter. I've attached an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop your setup requires. I've also linked our selection of adapters for you to look at once you know what you need.

In addition to my recommendations I've linked some articles on flat towing that you may find helpful.
