How to Change 4-Way Wiring Harness to 7-Way Wiring Harness to Add a Brake Controller

Question:

Im purchasing a boat with a trailer that has electric brakes and a five pole flat connector. I drive a Lincoln Navigator 2014 with a four pole flat connector. Is there a way to install a brake controller and make the brakes work through the four pole connector?

You will need to upgrade your wiring harness if you are wanting to add brake controller capabilities to your 2014 Lincoln Navigator. The 4-way that is now attached to your Lincoln is used for the brake lights, tail lights and turn signals.

To be able to plug your 5-way into your Navigator I recommend using the Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow Wiring Harness, part # HM48470, along with the Draw-Tite Wiring Kit, part # 5506. You will need to connect the wiring from your current 4-way and the kit # 5506 into the Hopkins Endurance Harness # HM48470 and then run the wiring from the kit # 5506 to your Navigator's battery and brake controller.

There may be a factory power wire and a brake controller wire along the frame of your Navigator that you can splice into instead of running the wires all the way up to the front of your vehicle. This will look like 2 wiring harnesses just under the rear drivers side door. If you have those then you will want to splice into the lower of the 2 harnesses. The harness will provide a 5-way where you can just plug your trailer into.

If your Navigator has the factory wiring already installed, then all you need is to splice your brake controller into your Lincoln's brake control wire. I've linked a video to a similar install on a Ford Expedition that demonstrates what I am talking about.

The brake controller that I recommend is the Prodigy P2 # 90885. To install this brake controller, you can use the plug-in adapter, # 3034-P, if you have the factory wiring ran along the frame. If not, the wiring for the new 7-way will have to run to the battery and into the cab for the brake controller. I attached an installation video on a Ford F-150 that you can follow for your Navigator.

I have included some helpful articles and demonstration videos for you as well.
