Why Cant a Convert-A-Ball 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter be Used on a Cushioned Pin Box

Question:

Just wondering why the adapter isnt compatible with air ride king pin boxes. We have the adapter all ready and are shopping for a 5th wheel but dont want to buy one that wont work! Thanks

Air ride pin boxes are cushioned and the Convert-A-Ball adapter # CAB-C5GX1216 is also cushioned. So the cushioning on each can work against each other and cause a stiff and unpleasant ride. The other thing is that this adapter requires drilling into the bottom of the pin box which could damage the internal parts of an air ride pin box.

Keep in mind that many 5th wheel trailer manufacturers will void the trailer warranty if using an adapter such as this. They put additional strain on the trailer frame because the distance between the ball and the frame is increased.

The only accepted adapters that won't void a warranty are the Reese Goose Boxes and those only fit in place of certain factory pin boxes. But they are air ride adapters so if you find a trailer with one of the pin boxes that is compatible I recommend using a Goose Box.

# RP85FR fits in place of Lippert 1621 and 1621HD Lippert 0719, 1621, and 1621HD pin boxes as well as Fabex PB-600 Series pin boxes
