Spindle Washer Compatibility With 1 Inch Spindle Without D-Shape

Question:

Hi. I have AL-KO 8440 axle with 7inch drums on my popup trailer, and I am about to start replacing bearings/races on it. The axle did not come with any kind of washer between the castle nut and the bearing. The spindle is 100 round 1 1/16, so using D or similar type washer cannot work. The only washer I could use is the one like # SW1000. Here is my question: if I use #SW1000, will this washer occasionally rotate on the spindle and eventually damage the spindle? With this washer being all round, and the spindle being all round, there is nothing to prevent it from turning. Am I wrong? Furthermore, my spindle when I measured it is just over 1inch 1 1/16. Will this washer fit? Please let me know. Much appreciated.

Since you don't have the D-shaped spindle that will allow for a D washer, a regular washer for a 1 inch spindle like # SW1000 will work. This washer not having any type of tab will allow it to rotate and without proper grease could cause damage as with any other washer. Many axles come with this type of washer. Not having a washer and allowing the bearing to come in contact with the back of the castle nut would be a much bigger issue unless you have Dexter Axles which were made for use without a washer on the 2000 lb axles.

A washer like Washer Spindle Tongue # 165863 may be an option for you if you have a groove in the axle to keep it from turning.

Both of these have an inner diameter of 1 inch, so if you measured your spindle with a caliper, your spindle would be too large. These are made to fit industry standard 1 inch spindles.
