How To Wire a Brake Controller with no Tow Package in a 05 Dodge Dakota

Question:

I have an 05 Dakota Quad with no tow package. I installed the hitch and have wired the lights to a 4/7 combo plug on the rear. Will this part work in my vehicle, if not which wire on the brake switch do I connect the red wire from the controller Im installing?

The Hopkins Plug-in Simple Brake Wiring Adapter - Dodge, part # HM47755 is designed to be used on vehicles that have a factory tow-package. Since your 2005 Dodge Dakota does not have the tow package, you will need to connect each of the wires individually from your brake controller to your truck. I attached a link below that details how this is done.

To determine which wire you will use for the brake switch, you will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, to determine which wire sees power when the brakes are applied and has no power when the brakes are not activated.

The black wire will connect to the battery through a 20 amp Pollak Circuit Breaker, part # PK54520, the white will be the ground wire, and the blue will go to the brake output post on your 7-way connector.

Check out the picture to the right to see a diagram of how all the wires will connect.
