Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch For 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 With 6-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

I have an 05 gmc 2500 with a 6 1/2foot bed. Will a slider guarantee not to hit my cab or do I need a sidewinder. And if so are there draw backs to the sidewinder over a slider? Thanks

For your 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed, let's start with a rail kit that is custom for your truck because you will need that for either a sliding hitch or a sidewinder. I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50064-58 which has custom brackets to make the installation easy.

For your 6-1/2 foot bed, a sliding hitch will work just fine with the rails listed above and will provide you with the turning clearance you need. A sidewinder will use the rails above with a standard non-sliding hitch to move the pivot point back 22 inches. Most sliding hitches will give you between 8 and 14 inches of travel. A sidewinder will require replacing your pin box where a sliding hitch doesn't require any changes to your trailer. The only draw back of a sidewinder is the additional cost. It is a great system that will let you stay in your vehicle and have the necessary clearance.

If you want a sliding hitch, I recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16521 which is a nice option at a good price point.

If you choose to go with a sidewinder, I recommend using the Reese 20K # RP30928. For a sidewinder recommendation, I will need to know what pin box you have on your trailer. This is often listed on a sticker right on your pin box itself. I've attached a help for us if we need to measure to determine your pin box. I also recommend the custom wedge # SWW-03 for this hitch for the best fit.

Let me know if you need a recommendation for a higher capacity hitch or a sidewinder recommendation.
