It means that the vehicle, when properly equipped, can tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500 pounds. If your 2012 Chevy Equinox is a model that is rated for 3,500 pounds then you will not have a problem towing a trailer weighing up to 3.052 pounds.
Usually to reach the maximum capacity you will need to have a trailer with electric brakes and use a brake controller to activate them. We do have the parts you will need for this.
First you will need to install a 4-Way trailer connector, # 118494 if the vehicle does not have the factory tow package (which if it doesn't then it is likely not rated for the maximum of 3,500 pounds). If it does have the factory tow package then you can use # 118264. A Chevy dealer can run the VIN to determine how the vehicle is equipped.
Next you will need to install # ETBC7 to add a 7-Way, retain the 4-Way, and have the wiring for a brake controller. For a brake controller I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation on a similar vehicle for you.
