Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Honda CR-V Behind an RV

Question:

I purchased Road Master base plates #RM-521559-4 for our 09 CRV from you a few years ago. We are considering replacing the 09 with a 2014 CRV. I understand the grill may be different. My question is, will the RM-521559-4 plates install on a 14 CRV. If not please explain why. I suspect the frame design is still the same but maybe you can confirm. Thank you.

Roadmaster base plates # RM-521559-4 fit the 2007 to 2011 Honda CR-V but not the 2014. The 2009 is part of the third generation of the CR-V and the 2014 is part of the fourth generation. The vehicle designs, while similar, are not the same and different enough to necessitate different base plates. The good news is that you can reuse your tow bar and safety cables and maybe the lighting and supplemental braking if you have it.

But you will need new base plates for the 2014 model and you can use # RM-521567-4. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation of the base plates for you. The base plates are compatible with all Roadmaster tow bars such as the Falcon 2 # RM-520. If you need new safety cables you can use # RM-643.

If you used magnetic lights for your 2009 CR-V you can use them for the 2014. Other light kits can transfer over as well including bulb and socket kit # RM-155 or diode kit # RM-154. Fuse(s) must be pulled during towing. Please check owner's manual

If your owner's manual says to only pull the #19 ACC radio fuse, use part # RM76511; if it states to pull the #19 ACC radio fuse and the #20 ACC key lock fuse, use part # RM76512.

You may also need a high/low adapter to keep the tow bar level. I have linked a help article showing how to measure and a link to the high/low adapters we carry.

And finally, most states now require supplemental braking on the vehicle being flat towed. One of the preferred systems for our installers and what I recommend is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO proportional system, # SM99251. It will apply the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on both vehicles.

Be sure to consult your vehicle owners manual for specific information on flat towing the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links to our series of help articles on flat towing for you.
