Wiring Harness on a 1990 Lexus LS400 Gets Hot
Question:
I have a 1990 Lexus LS400 using a 4-way connector to tow a 2007 Haulmark utility trailer. The trailer has a total of two tail/brake lights, and 12 side/rear/license plate lights. ALL of my lights work PERFECTLY, but the connector/converter itself gets really hot. Only the connector/converter gets hot, the wires into/out are ok. Even with the lights off and using only brake and turn signals, it heats up pretty good. I checked ground and its good and all lights are bright and work fine. Do I need a powered converter that has a separate wire to the battery? I calculate 10 amps total for the trailer 4 for tail/brk lamps and 6 amps for 12 aux. lamps. The trailer has been towed by a 2001 Suburban, 2005 F-150, 1996 Toyota Tacoma & a 1996 Jeep Cherokee using the 4 way connector w/out any heating issues. Could you please recommend the correct harness if that is the problem.

Expert Reply:
A typical taillight converter can handle between 8 and 9.2 amps. I would recommend the Heavy Duty Modulite Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # C59496. This converter is rated up to 15.9 amps, and is a Modulite system, which draws its power directly from the battery, instead of through the lighting circuits. Using this unit should solve your problem.
