Recommended Way to Carry a Kayak for a Ford F-150

Question:

I have a truck and I need to find a way to carry my 12 ft kayak. I do not want to put it in the bed because all of my camping gear will be there. Any options? I have a 2016 Ford F-150 short bed crew cab

As long as you have a 2 inch receiver on your 2016 Ford F-150, I recommend the Rhino-Rack # RTL002. This is one of our better options for kayak carriers and installs directly into your hitch.

In addition to this carrier I recommend using a roof rack to secure your kayak to the roof of your truck instead of the foam blocks. If you have the SuperCrew Cab, the Rhino Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack kit is a great option. This include the Crossbars # RRVA150S-2, the Legs # RRRLKVA, and the Fit Kit # DK427. If your truck has a SuperCab instead, the Yakima Roof Rack Kit is also another great option. The parts included in this kit are the Crossbars # Y00422, Baseline Towers # Y28TR, and the Fit Kit # Y06122.

The Darby Extend-A-Truck Carrier # DTA944-968-924 will enable you to carry your kayak while keeping your bed free for camping equipment as well, but it is more of an economy option. If you were wanting to use more than one block or are in need of some tie downs I recommend getting the Rightline Gear Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs # RL100K10 to help prevent scratches to your roof and to ensure safe hauling.

If you do not have a 2 inch hitch receiver I recommend using the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Hitch # 75216. This hitch meets the necessary requirements to haul the kayak.

I will provide some links for the demonstration videos for these parts.

I have a F150 2013 crew cab with a six foot bed and a level shell. What is the best setup to carry my Kayaks?

Since you have a camper shell on your F-150 I really like the idea of going with an adjustable rack on top of it. The Rhino-Rack # Y02-500B will work perfectly. You'll be able to slide the crossbars up and down the shell to create the perfect spacing for your kayaks (and anything else you might want to carry).
