Recommend Brake Controller To Use With Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Unit and 2007 GMC 3500HD

Question:

I have a 2007 GMC 3500HD and it seems that the factory installed controller will not operate my hydrastar. I have some Tekonsha Voyager units I have taken out of some of my other trucks. Will they operate the Hydrastar unit?

The item that you selected, Tekonsha P3 Trailer Brake Controller, part # 90195, will work for electric over hydraulic unit, like the Hydrastar. I would recommend using the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller as it has digital display and can troubleshoot problems.

The Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controller, # 39510 and older model Tekonsha Voyager Brake Controllers are not designed to be used with electric over hydraulic brake systems.

For installation of an aftermarket brake controller, you will need to locate a bundle of 5 blunt-cut wires under the driver side of the dash between the brake pedal and kick panel. There will be a Red/Black wire, White wire, Light Blue/White wire, Dark Blue wire, and there may or may not be an Orange wire.

The Red/Black vehicle wire will connect to the Black wire on the brake controller. The White vehicle wire will connect to the White wire on the brake controller. The Light Blue/White vehicle wire will connect to Red wire on brake controller. For the Dark Blue wire, you will need to run 10 Gauge Blue Primary Wire, part # 10-1-1 to the 7-way at the rear of your GMC Truck. You will cut the blue wire that is coming out of 7-way approximately 4 to 6 inches away from back of 7-way. Then, connect the blue wire that you ran from the brake controller to the Blue Wire on 7-way using quick splice, # SWC501915-1.

You will want to make sure and measure and order a little extra of 10 Gauge Blue Primary Wire, part # 10-1-1, as it is sold by the foot.

Finally, there a few connections you will need to make under the hood. You will need to locate 2 wires, both wires are red/black with eyelets on the end. One wire is located between the fuse box and driver side fender, the other should be located under the brake master cylinder. On the driver side, remove the fuse box cover, there will be 2 threaded studs that are different sizes, the wires which have different sized eyelets will connect to the corresponding studs using M6 Nut, part # 185916, and M8 Nut, part # 185917.

I have linked FAQ Aftermarket Brake Control Wiring for 07-11 GM Full-Size Truck with Factory Brake Control that you may find as a good reference and illustrates the instructions to install brake controller. I have also linked instructions for the Tekonsha P3 Trailer Brake Controller, part # 90195. I have also linked a video installation of a brake controller on a 2008 GMC Sierra, if you go to the 4:00 mark on this video it shows the under hood connections you must make.

I attached a link to the right that shows a # 90195 being installed on a similar vehicle to yours.
