For your 2000 Chevrolet K2500, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195. This brake controller is a proportional brake controller so the amount of pressure you apply to the brakes in your truck is the amount of pressure applied to your trailer brakes as well. This brake controller has a really nice LCD screen that takes the guess work out of code lights. This controller makes it easy to know what is going on with your connection at all times of operation.

To wire this brake controller there isn't a simple wiring harness connection under the dash, so the pictured connector you provided is likely for something else. If you need a 7-way connector, I recommend the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires, # ETBC7. This kit allows you to convert a 4-way trailer connector into a 4-way and 7-way for use with a brake controller. It comes with all the wire, circuit breakers, and connectors you will need for installation, as well as the mount for the vehicle side connector. If you already have a 7-way connector, then you would need the wiring kit # 5506 that comes with the wiring, circuit breakers and connections but not the 7-way connector.

If you don't already have a 4-way trailer connector, you will need to install that first. I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, # 118315, for this application. It will give you a quick and easy connection with connection points along the frame rail of your truck. This will simply plug into the # ETBC7 kit I recommend. I've attached videos and instructions for you.
