The Thule Self-Tensioning, Low-Profile Snow Tire Chains, # TH2004205104, will give you enough clearance because they will adjust tension and not just have slack in the chain. If you are concerned about the seeming contradicting information, you could go with a cable chain like Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, # PW1042. With these style chains, spring rollers are wrapped around sturdy wire cross cables. With this product, Rubber Adjusters like # PW100 are recommended.

In the Owner's Manual for the 2015 and 2016 Subaru Forester on page 7-34 (2015) and 7-35 (2016), it states "When tire chains are installed, stopping distances may be longer for a vehicle with the ABS system than one without. Be sure to reduce your speed and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front." On 7-39 (2015) and 7-40 (2016), the manual states "Even if your vehicle is equipped with X-mode, winter tires or snow chains should be used when driving on snow-covered or icy roads; in addition, vehicle speed should be reduced considerably."

On 8-11 (2015 and 2016), the manual states what you are referring to--"Tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body. NOTE: When tire chains cannot be used, use of another type of traction device (such as spring chains aka cable chains) may be acceptable if use on your vehicle is recommended by the device manufacturer, taking into account tire size and road conditions. Follow the device manufacturer’s instructions, especially regarding maximum vehicle speed. To help avoid damage to your vehicle, drive slowly, readjust or remove the device if it is contacting your vehicle, and do not spin your wheels. Damage caused to your vehicle by use of a traction device is not covered under warranty."

Here is what the owner's manual for the 2017 Subaru Outback says about tire chains... "Tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body. NOTE: When tire chains cannot be used, use of another type of traction device (such as spring chains) may be acceptable if use on your vehicle is recommended by the device manufacturer, taking into account tire size and road conditions. Follow the device manufacturer’s instructions, especially regarding maximum vehicle speed." So, the spring chains or cable chains would still be an option on this vehicle. For the 2.5i or the 2.5i Premium, I'd recommend the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair, # PW1042. For the 2.5i Limitied, 3.6R Limited, 2.5i Touring and 3.6R Touring, I'd recommend the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair, # PW1046. The rubber adjusters are recommended by Glacier Chains and that is part # PW99.
