The snow chains that will be easiest to install include features like drape-over-the-tire or clamp-on installation and automatic chain tensioning. These features are not usually found on entry-level chains like the Glacier Cable Chains # PW1034 which are a good basic chain for occasional emergency use. All chains that fit your 2009 Volvo V50's stock size 205/50-17 tires are shown on the linked page. All are the low-profile type known as S-Class chains which work on vehicles that have limited clearance in the wheel wells.

For chains that are still cost-effective but that will be easier than some others to install I suggest the Titan Chain Alloy Tire Chains # TC1540. These are the drape-over-the-tire type and they include assisted tensioning. A step up from these chains is the Thule CB-12 Diamond Pattern chain set # TH01221090; their diamond chain pattern will provide better grip.

Ease of installation is important since tire chains that you do not bother to install (because they are a pain) will not do you any good on a snowy road. Chains that you can install without a lot of difficulty will actually help you in an emergency and not just sit in your trunk. If you really think you could need to use chains, and you don't want them just to meet a legal requirement, then invest in better chains. One use will justify the expense.

It is always recommended that you review the vehicle owner's manual for any guidance or restrictions regarding the use of tire chains. Some vehicles may only be able to use them on one axle. I found an online manual for the V50 that states on page 186 that you can use chains on the front axle, but you'll want to check your manual to be sure.

The linked articles will give you more general information on tire chains.
