Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2016 Ford F-350 with Rail Kit
Question:
I will be getting a new 5th wheel in 02/2017. Going full timing next year. I have towed lots of trailers but never a 5th wheel. 2016 Ford F-350 8ft bed with bed pucks and tow package. 5th wheel total weight with all my stuff 19,000 lbs. I believe I need 3 things. 1. Reese RP30922 hitch. 2. Starter kit?? 3. If I fail to properly secure the king pin does anyone make a safety for this hitch so if the king pin s out it does not into my truck damaging the trailer and bed dent of shame???? All info is greatly appreciated.

You are on the right track. The Reese M5 fifth wheel hitch part # RP30922 will fit the factory fifth wheel prep package you have installed in the bed of your 2016 Ford F-350. This hitch also is designed to allow you to know for sure that it is solidly connected to your trailer with its handle/jaw design.
To open the jaw you pull out and back on the handle. When the king pin has fully seated into the hitch the handle will slide back in clamping around the kin pin. There is what's called the pull test which allows you to test the connection though if you are unsure. Basically you leave the landing gear down, apply the manual lever of the brake controller and then try to inch away from the trailer. If the truck comes unhitched you know the setup wasn't ready. If the trailer moves with the truck you are good to go.
Blue Ox used to make a bedsaver like what you are describing but since it was voiding the warranty of the hitches it was installed on they stopped making it.
