Forged, Self-Latching Jaw

Self-Latching Jaw

The one-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel hitch provides absolute security with its wraparound design. Increased jaw-to-king-pin contact results in not only a stronger connection, but less noisy rattling and stiff chucking as well.

The jaw is also always ready to receive, so you don't need to use the handle to open it before backing up toward your trailer. As long as the bail pin is removed from the latching handle, the jaw will accept the king pin as it enters the hitch.

Finally, the jaw is self-latching, so it will automatically secure your trailer's king pin when it moves into the jaw.

Quiet, Comfortable Ride

Pivot Bushings

In addition to the tight jaw tolerance, a close connection between the head and the pivot bushings further reduces rattle and movement. And because the pivot bushings are independent from the head, they can be tightened to ensure a strong connection over time.

King Pin Indicator Prevents High Pinning

King Pin Indicator

This M5 hitch features a built-in king pin indicator to ensure proper hookup. This indicator is located on the back of the head along with a V-shaped notch that are both visible from the cab of your truck. The V-notch is lined up with the jaw at the front of the hitch, and can be used as a guiding point to line the king pin up with the jaw as you back up your truck. The jaw also has an internal plate that keeps the king pin from entering if it is too high to enter safely. As a result, the king pin indicator will only change from red to green if the king pin is fully engaged in the jaw.

Easy-to-Use Latching Handle

Lever and Hitch

This hitch's handle is designed for smooth motion and effortless operation. It requires only 2 fingers to use and won't bind up as you pull. In addition, the handle is long, so it's easy to access from outside of your truck bed. And the ergonomic grip makes it comfortable to hold and pull from different angles.

The hitch came in 3 separate packages, all in the same delivery. Each package came with parts documents, care and assembly instructions. I did the assembly alone. Assembly was fairly easy, just cumbersome due to weight. During assembly, I believe the instructions have the center bolt inserted from the outside; not possible to clear the leg frame so I had to finagle the nut while inserting the bolt from the inside. I initially assembled the hitch unattached to the truck bed. When complete, I could not get the pucks to align with holes in the bed. I loosened the legs, set in the bed and tightened the bolts, which then made for a perfect fit. I have my hitch set to the highest setting for ensured bed rail to camper clearance; might lower later on. The hitch is easy to use; no issues connecting or disconnect the camper. I did have to replace the fifth wheel to base hitch pin clips with shorter ones because when the camper tilted, the clips got bent (unknown to me, the clips went vertical and could not clear the tilt of the fifth wheel and base). Wasn't a big deal to me, but could present an issue if not recognized. It is possible for the pins to contact the base as well. I use a neoprene or plastic disc on the hitch so I don't have to grease the wheel; makes for a clean and easier removal /installation. But as you can see, there are gouges/scratches just from normal connecting and disconnecting. I remove the fifth wheel from the base when removing/installing hitch just to reduce weight. Even without the wheel, the base assembly is still heavy. Overall, I think this is a good hitch; with that being said, this is the only brand fifth wheel hitch I've ever used and this one here is the only brand fifth wheel hitch I've ever owned.

Talk about disappointment, ordered this in early October to replace a curt q20 slider hitch I had on a previous truck. It arrived well enough considering how heavy the parts are. There was no obvious signs of damage, install was relatively simple enough. Early November rolls around and we are going to be moving our 5th wheel, I go to hook up to measure clearances of bed rails etc. It turned into a multi-hour ordeal. Backing in following the directions allowing the pin to slide up to the hitch it binded in a spot where I was unable to release it(pictures attached), after spending quite a while raising all the weight of the truck moving backwards and forward with it partially latched trying to get it to move some way I was finally able to get it released by using a crow bar to push the jaw open and drive the truck out. So now I need to find out the problem I fully reset it back to its receiving position with the handle in the latched but not locked position. Try again, the exact same thing happens. So I took the head of to experiment and see if it will slide on to the king pin maybe there is another issue I'm not noticing, works well and fully seats with the green indicator but again doesn't release without using a crow bar on the jaws. Now mind you I fully lubed this as the instructions state, even using the needle grease gun attachment, so I didn't think that was the issue. Still decided more lubrication couldn't hurt the situation, I used dry lithium grease everywhere, moving every part that can move while doing it. Hooked it back to the truck, success, well partially. Got a full seat of the king pin with the handle in a very not latched position got it moved in to the correct area and after a few thumps it allowed me to seat the safety pin. Try and hook it up again, now the arm doesn't fully close when attached to the king pin. At this point we get it off again, having to use a crow bar, and notice the internal latch that locks the arm in the safe or unsafe position is lose and one of the springs had come off, thankfully it didn't get lost as its about 2in long and small. At this time its been almost 3 hours of frustration. I spend another hour getting the tiny spring reattached in what seems to be the correct position(unable to find a diagram of the internal springs online). Go to hook it up again, this time we get a full successful latch and the locking arm perfectly closes and allows the safety pin, but alas we are still unable to unlatch the 5th wheel without moving the jaw with a crowbar.

I have never had such frustration with something that's so critical to the ability of me to tow my 5th wheel. I am unsure if I can trust it to work correctly.

It is not the first time that I have heard of the 5th wheel being hard to disengage from. I reached out to Reese about the issues that you are having with the hitch head. They advised to make sure the unit is well lubricated by taking off the head unit and using a lithium grease spray in two locations. One place is to spray in the handle area where the indicator would be and the other place would be on the opposite side of the handle where you can see the edge of a black spring. This will allow everything to move freely. Also, the make sure that the king pin is not coming into the 5th wheel too high. I am sure that yours is fine however it was mentioned to me. If this does not help, please let me know.

Couldn’t be easier to use or more heavily built and secure. Only one issue. Though I didn’t have to change out bolts or use a tap and die set to put the base together, I would highly recommend having the correct tap and die available, just in case. From what I have read many people have had problems with these bolts/holes. I only had an issue with one, but it wasn’t fun. I don’t have a T and D available. Pretty sure it would have been a cinch if I had. ALSO, most people I know don’t have the correct type of torque wrench for the job. If you have to buy one it might be cheaper to have a trusted shop assemble the hitch. It’s pretty easy, but the wrench isn’t cheap, even if you buy an inexpensive (cheap) one. I rated 5 stars because I read all of the reviews and issues, bought with my eyes wide open, and was very happy to find that the bulk of the comparatively few negative reviews were either exaggerate, a QC issue that had been dealt with, or I just got plain lucky. I’ve had the hitch for 7months pull a 16,000 GVWR 5th wheel of my own and have pulled for friends.

This would be a three but etrailer's customer service is excellent. Everyone I've dealt with has been exceptional.

Reese needs to get their act together. Three month backorder (okay COVID-19 has everyone backed up). Finally get the order and the release handle grip is destroyed, just crumbled almost like it was cooked. I have to adjust the pucks, which is expected, but Reese installed the Carter pins, which are a [beast] to remove in order to adjust the puck, suggestion Reese just leave them out for the installer to install. The the final [blow] from Reese on top of their otherwise great paint job, the bolt holes for the assembly are filled with paint, Reese howabout running a thread chase through these threads so the installer doesn't risk cross threading the bolt, it's just the small things that would make an otherwise outstanding hitch better.

Aside from my initial comments this hitch has been great. No issues at all.

We are so very pleased with our 27K hitch! The order process was easy and delivery was very fast. We have used a Reese hitch for years now. We just upgraded our fifth wheel RV and it wieghs in at 16K our old hitch was an 18K hitch so we were within 2K of max weight. We felt that that was too close so we went big, it feels (pulls) better and I feel more safe knowing that we have plenty of hitch. Thank you for such great products.

The hitch is amazing, we have been pulling our 42 fifthwheel all over and its like it isnt even there. No pops or squeaks either. Very very pleased.

by:

This hitch was easy to assemble, mounted perfectly in my truck, and is simple to use. I have total confidence in hitching up, as the locking jaw is either locked or it's not, there is no question of it's security.

One year and 44 hook-ups later, I still love this hitch. The only complaint is that it can be sticky when unhooking and the jaw doesnt freely open. I have to push it open with a stick while the truck is pulled forward. Ive tried different kinds of lube with no change. I keep it well lubed greased, and Ive also added a tonneau cover to keep the rain off it. The handle does not interfere, as its just the right size to fit. I am, however, still very confident in this hitch, as the design is pretty much foolproof. If the jaw locks, its locked and wont unlock until you manually disengage.

Works very well. Easy to unlatch. Red Green indicator is great to have. Fairly light weight. Easy to install and remove from truck.

As other reviews have pointed out, Reese didn't run a chaser through the threads as they're all gummed up with the paint/powder coat. Real pain to clean them out as a tap that large isn't usually in most people's tool box. I had to adjust one of the castle nuts requiring that the cotter pin be removed which took about 30 mins of banging on it. I've never experienced a cotter pin that hard to remove. I would have preferred that they not install the pins at the factory. For these reasons they lose a star in this review. The hitch is robust and once installed there is no slack or chatter once engaged in the Ford Puck system. The actuation of the handle/jaw is smooth. The handle will fit under a Super Duty F-450 tonneau cover as long as you pivot the head to the left to lower it.

After 2 months Reese had to replace the head assembly as it would no longer latch onto the king pin couldnt get green indicator. After about a year the T-Pins started getting knurled and the latch handles started allowing the T-pins to rotate when in the locked position. Called Reese, opened a ticket and then heard nothing back and they wouldnt respond to emails. Called back after several weeks, waited on hold for 90 minutes only to find out they couldnt located my ticket number in their system. The rep opened another ticket and said hed submit everything and get new parts to me ASAP. Got an email confirmation of warranty claim. Then heard nothing after that, and again, no responses to emails. Its now mid-August 2023 and this has been going on since late May 2023.

I can't give a fair review as we've not installed it yet but after watching YouTube videos and reading reviews this is what we choose. I also called and asked questions before I ordered.

Now as far as etrailer goes, I'd give it 5 stars as we've ordered before in the past and never had any major issues. This 5th wheel arrived in great shape and even if didn't, it would be the shipper not etrailer.

Once we have it installed and have used it, I'll post an updated rating.

Thank you etrailer!

Working wise, its doing great. However, the plate does have some gouges from the king pin because the plate is so large compared to other 5th wheel hitches and starting to rust. Will get around to smoothing it out and painting it next month. Weve gone over some very harsh highways since we got it, and it still holds the trailer! lol. I would now go up to 4 stars on it.

Are you using the lube plate part # RP83001 to avoid scratching the plates of the fifth wheel?

by:
2019 Ford F-350 Super Duty

Hitch assembly was fairly straightforward, took less than an hour. Did have to purchase a torque wrench since the one I had only went to 150 ft lbs. Figured I'd purchase it so I could keep it in the truck to make any adjustments, if required, and check that bolts remain torqued to xxx ft lbs over time. Had to make two small adjustments when I put it in the puck system, which was easy to do. The red/green indicator had popped out of the head unit. I figured out that it just needed to be popped back in to position. Haven't towed with it yet so I can't comment on that at this time. Hitch is beefy and I doubt will not be a problem handling our 5th wheel. So far I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great hitch! Went together as per the instructions, pulls our 20,000 lbs 5th wheel great. Love the positive "Green" when the pin is in place as well as the wrap around jaw, real selling points for me.

Love this hitch over the last year! Pulled our 20,000 lbs 5th wheel over 11,000 miles in the last year without any issues what so ever.

by:

Went together easy, no issues, functions exactly as it should, well built, no complaints. We pull a 45 ft 5th wheel TH. Would not hesitate to buy it again.

by:

I haven’t pulled with it yet but the quality looks good. Assembly was easy. The hardware packet was missing from one of the 3 boxes.

All of the pictures show the M5 with blue mesh sides on the front and back
Mine has black steel on the sides with just the M5 logo.

I received the head and center portion. I did not receive the legs so my rush to order and use this weekend is now questionable.
I called and I was told they would get the legs out to me right away and email when shipped. That was in the morning. Im still waiting on the shipping confirmation. That just makes the weekend trip more questionable. I was hoping it would get out today. Looks like not.

it went together well and connects way better than my old hitch nice and solid no chucking while traveling, the red / green indicator is a cheap piece of plastic that doesn't work on mine reads green all the time, unhooks easy from trailer

All good one box was beat up but all parts were there and the install was easy looks good works great. Thanks guys

This 5th wheel is one of the most trouble sum I have owned. It binds easily and when it does is hard to disengage. As result, I do not trust it and am continually checking it when in use.

Etrailer Expert

Jenny N.

6/17/2023

I understand wanting to trust your 5th wheel to do its job. It is not the first time that I have heard of the 5th wheel being hard to disengage from. I have reached out to Reese in the past and they typically want to know if the 5th wheel has been greased at all the grease points mentioned in the manual. A step that is often overlooked is spraying white lithium grease to the internal mechanisms and rotating the handle a few times to distribute the grease. If you have already tried this and has not helped, please let me know.

Love it, the handle grip cracked and etrailer replaced it super quickly!

Would rate higher but have not needed to use the receiver yet.

by:

hitch works well, should have adjusted to highest level as when exiting a steep lot with a sharp turn i "kissed" the side rail of my truck with my 5th wheel. i'm not sure i like the new single jaw vs the old style though. aslo my lock indicator is already broken but just need to visually verify the lock.

Product works fine, the only issue i have had with it is the visible indicator showing that the hitch is engaged no longer works.

by:
2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty

I want my B&W back. Not happy at all with this, and etrailer customer service was just as bad. The locking indicator was broke when it came out of the box. I contacted etrailer, they said they would contact the manufacturer, well 10 days later still haven't heard back. Also the locking mechanism has a bolt that goes through into the ouck system. That bolt has 1 side flat, to allow for posistive placement, well reese decided it would be fun to install this 90 degrees the wrong way, and not align the flat side of the bolt up with the notch in the handle. So now to to remove it, the threads will be trashed, and or the positive placement will slip some, if I just twist it to align. Horrible Q and A on Reese's part, and horrible customer service on etrailers part, oh and I am a reseller for etrailer, so I look bad as well.
