How to Determine Fifth Wheel Hitch Head Height Needed
Question:
I would like to know how to determine the proper height adjustment of the 5th wheel hitch for my trailer? I think this is important to know to purchase the correct hitch. The Curts 16516 is what I am considering. Thanks

The correct height for your hitch really depends on your fifth wheel trailer and truck setup. Basically you want your trailer to sit as level as possible so you will need to pick the correct height adjustment of the # 16516 based on what will give you a level setup for your trailer.
What you will do is park the truck and trailer on level ground. Using the landing gear/jacks on the 5th wheel to make it level, then measure from the ground to the bottom of the pin box skid plate, not the king pin, and record the measurement.
Next measure from the ground to the top of the skid plate on the 5th wheel hitch and record it. Adjust either the height of the 5th wheel head or the king pin on the trailer or both to get the measurements as close to the same as you can.
The Curt hitch has a height range of 15 to 17 inches.
