Parts Needed to Install 7-Way and Brake Controller on a 2016 Toyota Tacoma with a 4-Way

Question:

Will this part work on a 2016 toyota tacoma that does not have the tow package? I installed a hitch and a 4 pin but now need a 7 pin for an rv. Thanks,

The kit you want to use to convert your 4-way to a 7-way and install a brake controller is the part # ETBC7. This adapter will give you a 4-way and a 7-way like the # HM40975 that you referenced but it also comes with all of the needed wiring to make the job easy and as painless as possible.

If you have your heart set on the Hopkins you would want the part # HM40975-11998 instead as it comes with a wiring harness for the 7-way. You would have to cut the 4-way off your current setup and hardwire it to the harness. Use the part # 5506 to power the controller and then run a length of 10 gauge wire part # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) from the blue wire of the controller to the blue wire of the 7-way.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

Check out the install video I attached on a similar a 2009 Tacoma of a brake controller.
