Troubleshooting Brake Controller Install on 2007 Chevy Silverado Where Controller Wont

Question:

I have a 2007 Silverado, I picked up a voyager 9030 brake control along with a 3015 harness. seemed pretty straight forward. plug in under the dash, second slot over, plug into controller, add 40 amp fuse. wouldnt work, so I got my tester out to make sure there was power to the red wire under the hood..good, checked the plug on the end of the harness, no power to the black wire, so I unplugged the harness, used my tester for the power wire, found it was the pin next to it, moved the wire in the harness, checked the red wire, pushed brake and there was power. now I have power to the black wire and the brake wire, plug into the controller ...nothing. take my truck to the trailer company where I bought this shit. tech tells me I need to have the trailer plugged in. plug the trailer in.. nothing, take my truck and trailer back to the tech, tells me he doesnt know, takes another controller and plugs it in ...same result. tells me maybe I need to wire the blue wire under the hood by the fuse box back to the trailer plug as GM does half a job, doesnt work, take my truck to GM and they tell me the controller is no good... hoped you can help

To install Voyager brake controller part # 39510 in your 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic the correct harness is in fact the 3015-P that you have. So you do technically have all of the correct parts to install the controller.

The issues you described is 99% of the time due to the underhood connections not being complete on the truck. This is a very common situation for GM trucks like yours so the advice you got regarding that is at least partially true. If you check out the attached links on this page you will see a help article that covers everything needed to make these connections as well as an install video that shows the Voyager being installed on a GM truck of the same generation as yours.

If all else fails you can run a length of 10 gauge wire from the blue wire of the controller back to the 7-way to bypass everything. You would want part # 10-1-1 which is 10 gauge wire sold by the foot.

If the controller just isn't powering on at all you can try running the white wire of it to a known ground and the black to 12 volt power to see if the display lights up then. If you have a known working 12 volt power on the black wire then the issue is the ground and you would want to run the white wire of the controller to the negative post of the battery.
