Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness Needed For 1996 Toyota Tacoma
Question:
I have a question about a previous question posted by someone else here: https://www.etrailer.com/question-3169.html I have a 96 Toyota Tacoma. Do I need part #118379 like it says in that link above, or can I just use a regular connector without the converter box thing? I have a regular 4-pin connector. The female end which goes to the trailer has 5 wires including ground and the male end which goes to the truck has 4 wires including ground. Will this not work? If not, then why not? And in that case I suppose I would need part #118379? Thanks! Chris

Since your Tacoma has separate wiring meaning the brake and turn signals are on separate wires, a converter is needed to get a harness on your truck.
The # 118379 has a converter built in so it makes installing much easier. Just plug the # 118379 into the wiring behind the tail lights and you are good to go.
When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.
The wiring you described on your trailer sounds like it is what is called a wishbone wiring. A wishbone harness has two running light wires and that is why there are 5 wires.
