Troubleshooting Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller HM47295 That Blow Fuses

Question:

When I hit the pedal in my truck the little light comes on the brake controller and immediately goes out blowing the fuse under the hood of the truck I put another fuse in and same thing. Then I dont have taillights also. If I use the manual override slide on brake controller I have brake lights and the little light on brake controller illuminates. Help why do I keep blowing fuses?

If the manual override on your Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller # HM47295 operates the controller normally (it lights up and does not blow fuses) but using the brake pedal does blow fuses, this suggests that there is an issue on the red wire. The red wire carries the input signal for the controller, which comes from the brake light switch.

It sounds like either the wrong wire is connected to this red input wire on the controller or the correct wire is attached but there is a short on it. The correct wire to connect to the red input wire is the one that does to the cold side of the brake light switch. This is the wire that goes hot ONLY when the pedal is pressed but at no other time.
