How to Wire Trailer Brakes to a Breakaway Kit
Question:
I have an older Stewart trailer that I just bought. Am trying to wire the brakes to the brake away box. The trailer brakes have 1 black and 1white wire to the front of the trailer. The diagram in your article shows 3 wires. What am I missing?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Brake magnets just have a ground wire and a power wire. The output wire from the breakaway system will go to the power wires on the magnets. The breakaway battery will have a ground wire, input wire, and output wire to a switch, The switch has an output wire and that is the one that goes to the brake magnet power wires.
I am not sure which diagram or article you are looking at. If you could provide a link to it and email it to me I can better explain it. I have included a link to our help article on installing breakaway kits. If you are talking about that diagram then it shows the power wire going into the battery from the trailer connector, a ground wire, and output to the switch.
