Can a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch be Installed on a 2016 Ram 2500 Short Bed with Ram Box

Question:

I just purchased a 2016 Ram 2500 with 6.4 ft Ram Box, dealer said I could install a BandW turnover ball hitch selling me a BandW model GNRK1384 and a Curt 7 way electrical hookup #56070. I now read here that this will not work. Can you please tell me what my options are.

In order to tow a 5th wheel trailer with a 2016 Ram 2500 that has the Ram Box feature you will need to use a Sidewinder pin box on the trailer. Sidewinders only fit in place of certain OEM pin boxes though. You can use the help article I have linked to determine if there is one for your trailer's pin box.

First, for an installation kit, I recommend custom kit # C16427-204. There is less drilling required for custom kits. Then you will need a fixed 5th wheel hitch like Curt E16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Slide Bar Jaw - 16,000 lbs # C16115 with Wedge # RP64FR.

Since the Sidewinder moves the pivot point of the trailer back 22 inches the pin box will not hit the bed sides when turning; which is what the issue is with the Ram Box models.
