Recommended Hitch Cargo Carrier for Better Ground Clearance on 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Question:

Have 2014 elantra. Need lift as harbor freight carrier drags. Need clearance to clear bumper against cantilever effect. . Money is not a issue. What is your recommendation? 1 1/4 to 2inch lift conversion adapter needed. Very cognizant of cantilever effect, Either the 40.00 or 50.00 adapter would be contenders. My harbor freight carrier has 1 INCH GROUD CLEARANCE. pUT IN KYB shocks, but not much help.. Recommendations? thanks..

We do offer a hitch adapter that can be used with a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch like those made for your 2014 Hyundai Elantra to allow use of a 2-inch accessory item like a cargo carrier. Brophy's Hitch Adapter with 5-Inch Rise # HT5R will fit into your 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch and provide 5-inches of rise for the 2-inch receiver opening. If your cargo carrier can fit a 2-inch hitch you can use this adapter for better ground clearance.

However, please note that as with all hitch adapters this item will reduce your hitch capacity by 50-percent. This loss of hitch capacity results from the extended geometry of the system when the adapter is used. It allows for more leverage to be applied to the hitch tube by the loaded carrier and this causes the loss of capacity. This means that a Class I hitch like Draw-Tite # 24902, which is normally rated for 200-lbs of tongue weight, will now have only a 100-lb rating. This means that the combined weight of the carrier and its contents cannot exceed this 100-lb hitch capacity.

If your cargo carrier will only fit into a 1-1/4-inch hitch then you will also need a reducer sleeve # HT02 that will convert the 2-inch receiver of the HT5R back down to the 1-1/4-inch size to match your carrier. There is a better option.

The best way to transport cargo on your Elantra is to use a carrier (and no adapters) that will provide the ground clearance you need. Class I-compatible cargo carrier # C18110 from Curt will fit your 1-1/4-inch hitch and since its shank has 3-3/4-inches of rise built-in, you may not need any adapter at all, and this would mean you do not lose any of your hitch capacity.
